How to Make Rainy Days Fun for Kids
It’s raining outside and the kids have no classes, just as they get out of bed, they’re thinking of what a waste of a day it will be. They don’t realize that you have a whole day of activities prepared for them. With your positive attitude, you can instill in the minds of your children that fun depends on what you do and who you are with. Create a sunny atmosphere with some activities you can do with your kids and be surprised at how fast the day has gone.
Play treasure hunt. Kids love role playing. Doing this not only keeps them active, but stretches their imagination too. Join the fun and pretend to be pirates looking for treasure. The couch is the ship, the dining room is the island, and the chocolates are the treasure. Stick together while you travel the ocean (the whole floor) in search of gold – chocolate gold.
Read stories to your children. Classic stories like Cinderella, The Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk all are very interesting to children. Read them a fairy tale or two while letting their minds wander to the depths of their imagination. Have a question and answer portion; you can ask them, “What if you were Jack?” Another way to make storytelling interesting is to have a reenactment of some of the parts of the story.
Hold a newspaper fashion show. Whether you have boys or girls at home, they will enjoy this activity. Mom and Dad are the models and the kids are the fashion designers. All you need are old clothes, or even newspapers, scissors, tape and some imagination. Ask the kids to create original designs and dress you up for the fashion show. Take pictures and add them to your albums as memorabilia.
Play dress up. Bring out the costumes and give the kids different roles to play. What should one wear if he were a teacher or a lawyer? You can do this in the form of a game and have several rounds. The first one to dress up before the given time lapses wins. Of course, the clothes they wear should match their ‘profession’.
Camp inside. Pretend that the indoors is a sunny outdoor atmosphere. Bring out the tent and set it up complete with the sleeping bags and pillows. And for your food, grill some hotdogs and marshmallows on the stove for the kids to enjoy. Sing some campfire songs and play team building activities. The kids can actually sleep inside the tent for the night to complete the camping experience.
Have a movie night. After a long day of role playing, running around and having fun, the whole family can relax. Just sit on the couch with the kids while watching children’s movies and eating popcorn.
You can squeeze in all these activities in one rainy day. The next time, even though it’s gloomy outside, your kids will still look forward to a fun-filled day with the whole family.
