HOW DOES IT WORK?

You create a spelling list on SpellQuizer by making an audio recording of the words you want your children to practice. These words will then be played back one by one. Your children type in the word they hear. If the spelling is incorrect, SpellQuizzer immediately displays the correction. Both words, the correct and incorrect spelling are shown so your child can make a comparison. When the list is completed, SpellQuizzer will ask if they want to be quizzed again on the words that were misspelled. So, your children can keep on practicing until they’ve spelled  all the words on the list correctly.

If you don’t have a PC microphone to record down the list of words, you can type in a reminder phrase instead. A reminder phrase is a definition of the word or a sentence that will help the children know what word you want them to spell. But of course, it’s more fun for your children to hear you say the words.

DOES IT WORK?

I have the software installed on my computer and 2 of my children (aged six and eight) are using it. I can see their excitement because to them, it’s a computer game. As long as it has something to do with computers, it is fun. That’s how children are. If I were to ask them to take out a paper to write the words as I quiz them, I would hear lots of moans and groans. But with SpellQuizzer, there’s no resistance and no attitude problems. It only takes a few minutes for them to go through their list. I try to make the audio recordings funny and personal. That adds a little more fun to it. My daughter asked if she could do the recordings herself and I said yes. It’s another win for me because she also gets to practice making sentences with the words.  SpellQuizzer is definitely helping my children spell better.

DISADVANTAGES OF THIS SPELLING SOFTWARE

1. It doesn’t have a reporting system in which you can track your children’s progress. So, if your children practiced on their own, you have no way of knowing how many they spelled correctly or incorrectly and which words they are having trouble with, unless they tell you.
2. Your voice recording may not be very clear. Your own pronunciation may not be very clear. So when you record your list, make sure you speak properly. Also, it’s best to do the recording when your children are not around (my children were giggling away when I did my recording) and there’s no background noise. 3. Make sure you don’t make your spelling list too long. They will get tired and bored. If your children have plenty of words to learn, break it up into several spelling lists.
4. SpellQuizzer is more like the “testing” stage of their learning. They still have to learn the words first. If you follow the Copy Cover Compare (CCC) approach to learning spelling, that would mean children still have to take to pen and paper to look and copy new words they want to learn. Only after this initial stage of learning should they use SpellQuizzer to spell without looking at the words.

MY VERDICT

This is a very simple, no-fuss but powerful and effective spelling software. The best and fun feature of this software is the self-customized spelling list. You can make your sentences funny and entertaining. For example, for the word “over”, your sample sentence could be “Mommy likes to jump over daddy’s big stomach.” I’m sure that’ll get them giggling. I also like how this software caters to all children regardless of age and level. I even made a list for my 2 1/2 year old. It went like this “/a/ for apple”, “/b/ for ball” etc…. He is so happy that he can be part of this program just like his older siblings.
